20+ years across retail, media, telecom and OTT have given me not only milestones but multiple learnings across spectrum personally and professionally. I have been fortunate enough to work across organizations of the likes of ALTBalaji, ZEE5, Sony, UTV, Tata Docomo, Barista to name a few.
I am one of the few fortunate professionals who have had the fortune of not only working across industries but also launch a broadcast channel, a telecom brand and an OTT platform. It was much before OTT had become rage that I decided to try my acumen there. Looking back, I am certainly glad that I took this decision on a huge leap of faith as OTT definitely was not the mainstream of entertainment at that point in timeline.
I have worked with Ronnie Screwvala and the team to launch UTVi, a business news channel and the learnings were immense from this sharp suave gentleman who is an eminent personality. In Tata Docomo I worked with a legend like Dr.Mukund Rajan and at Zee5 Amit Goenka and Punit Goenka. All these dynamic industry leaders have had immense contribution in shaping up my thoughts and I am forever grateful to them. At UTVi, we not only launched but also fought to see it flourish in a tough market as a business and brand. When Tata Docomo was launched, we exceeded the expectation of management by 2X on subscribers’ base on the back of our ‘Pay per Second’ product and campaign that took the industry by storm and eventually TRAI made it a mandate for all telecom firms to follow. Then OTT came calling with Zee5 and since this was Zee Network’s foray in digital, even more prestigious as well as nail biting. The challenge was to make space in a market that was already getting crowded and all possible content positions were taken and we then came up with a language proposition ~ ‘Apni Bhasha Mein Feel Hai” since Zee also has the largest language network in broadcast.
Today, it is one of the biggest Made in India OTT platform across globe with several critically acclaimed shows under its belt. From here I moved to Alt Balaji where I helped in the democratization of OTT by bringing the product to masses of the country. Right from growing the subscriber base to 10X to enhancing the Brand sheen and share of voice, we ensured we built a huge brand with minimal resources across content, tech and marketing, almost in a startup environment.
All these progressive steps have helped me gain a larger and far-sighted perspective on business approach as well the projects that I now undertake. Today OTT is the mainstream platform for entertainment even for masses and digital revenue has overtaken broadcast revenue in many countries, including India and I am glad that I have been a part of this shift and entertainment evolution.
